"When I am Old...
I shall wear turquoise
And a straw cowboy hat that
doesn't match and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my social security
on white wine and carrots
And sit in the alley way of my barn
And listen to my horses breathe.
I will sneak out in the middle of a summer night
And ride the dappled mare
Across the moonstruck meadow,
If my old bones will allow.
And when people come to call, I will smile and nod,
As I walk them past the gardens to the barn
And show, instead, the flowers growing there.
In stalls fresh-lined with straw
I will learn to shovel and sweat and
wear hay in my hair as if it were a jewel.
And I will be an embarrassment to my only child
Who will have not yet found the peace in being free
To love a horse as a friend,
A friend who waits at midnight hour
With muzzle and nicker and patient eyes
For the kind of person I will be
When I am old."
PATTY BARNHART

Listen to the horses clipping, clopping,
hoofbeats everywhere never stopping...
Gonna ride my Palomino,
Ride him to the fair....

"A Letter From Your Horse" (original version):

When you are tense, let me teach you to relax.
When you are short tempered, let me teach you to be patient.
When you are short sighted, let me teach you to see.
When you are quick to react, let me teach you to be thoughtful.
When you are angry, let me teach you to be serene.
When you feel superior, let me teach you to be respectful.
When you are self absorbed, let me teach you to think of greater things.
When you are arrogant, let me teach you humility.
When you are lonely, let me be your companion.
When you are tired, let me carry the load.
When you need to learn, let me teach you.
After all, I am your horse.

And now, the REAL story...

When you are tense, let me teach you that there are lions in them thar woods, and we need to leave NOW!
When you are short-tempered, let me teach you how to slog around the pasture for an hour before you can catch me.
When you are short sighted, let me teach you to figure out where, exactly, in the 40 acres I am hiding.
When you are quick to react, let me teach you that herbivores kick MUCH faster (and harder) than
omnivores.
When you are angry, let me teach you how well I can stand on my hind feet, because I don't feel like cantering on my right lead today.
When you are worried, let me entertain you with my mystery lameness.
When you feel superior, let me teach you that, mostly, you are the maid service.
When you are self-absorbed, let me teach you to PAY ATTENTION. Remember? I told you about those lions in them thar woods?
When you are arrogant, let me teach you what 1900 lbs. of "YAHOO LETS GO!" can do when suitably inspired.
When you are lonely, let me be your companion. Let's do lunch. Also, breakfast and dinner.
When you are tired, don't forget the 600 lbs. of grain and 150 bales of hay that need to be unloaded.
When you are feeling financially secure, let me teach you the meaning of "Veterinary Services."
When you need to learn, hang around, babe. I'll learn ya."

FOR MEN: HOW TO SPOT A HORSE WOMAN

1.She's easy to find: She's either on her horse, or in the barn.
2. She holds a Double Standard: She kisses the most gnarly, bewhiskered beast, but recoils when a man needs a shave.
3. She owns ONE vacuum cleaner and operates it exclusively in the barn.
4. She's quite social provided another horse woman gives the party. Falls asleep in her soup at all other functions.
5. She's a culinary perfectionist She checks every section of hay for mold, yet doesn't blink when she petrifies dinner in the microwave.
6. Occasionally amorous although she'll NEVER leave lipstick on your collar - at worst, a slight trace of chapstick.
7. Easy to outfit: No need for embarrassing visits to uncomfortable little boutiques. She finds all she needs at the local tack store.
8. Owns a selective sense of smell Bitterly complains about sticky-sweet cigar smoke of others while remaining totally oblivious to the almost visible aroma of her barn boots drying next to the heater.
9. Unmistakable in a bathing suit: She's the one whose tan starts at the nose, ends at the neck, and picks up again at the wrists.
10 Has your leisure at heart: Eliminates grass cutting by turning every square inch of lawn into pasture, which in turn, converts itself into mud.
11. A Financial Whiz: Easily defends spending $500 at the tack shop, but croaks when you blow $10 on bowling.
12. Socially aware: Knows that formal occasions call for clean boots.
13. Sentimental fool: Displays a minimum of six 8x10 color photos of the horses in her house and carries a crumpled snapshot of you (taken before you were married) somewhere in the bottom of her purse.
14. Possesses unique displays of affection: If she pats you on the back and says, "Good Boy," believe it or not, SHE LOVES YOU! AUTHOR UNKNOWN
